We like the “shabby chic” appearance of our Périgord house, less perfectly pointed than their Dordogne neighbours (and also cheaper). So apart from new roofs for the house and barn, 4 new French door sets and several double glazed windows, including the “chien assis” dormer windows in the attic, we left everything the same! Oh and raised the front door lintel when our tall architect friend David pointed out that he would have to bend double to come in. Lorry loads of gravel improved the look of the front and back and made us look deceptively finished. The shutters (all 20 sets of them) were painted in a factory style production line with 5 coats (yes 5) of protector/primer, undercoat and Weatherseal grey and thanks must go to Malcolm’s nephew Tom who popped out for a relaxing break, just at the right time for us (and probably wrong for him).
